Taylor 814ce Ltd $3,999
As with songwriting, sometimes the best inspiration for building a guitar comes when we least expect it. That pretty well sums up this limited release, a cutaway Grand Auditorium 814ce LTD featuring back and sides of magnificent black heart sassafras.
Musically, sassafras has a tone profile that's hard to pin down because it varies from player to player. In general, it blends the midrange warmth of mahogany, the top-end sparkle of rosewood, and the clarity of maple. Also like maple, it tends to respond to the unique nuances of a player's attack.

Taylor 414ce Ltd $3,199
The Taylor 414ce V-Class Grand Auditorium LTD edition acoustic-electric guitar is a unique instrument with a variety of custom elements artfully incorporated by Taylor Master Guitar Designer, Andy Powers. The sinker redwood top was chosen for its striking look and warm, played-in sound with mid-range bloom. The back and sides are made of East Indian rosewood, which has a sweeping frequency range from deep, assertive lows to bell-like, sparkling highs. The Grand Auditorium body shape makes for a highly versatile instrument, yielding ample volume in response to light fingerpicking, and reacting to medium strumming and flatpicking with a clear, balanced sound.
The 414ce’s sound is amplified by the Taylor Expression System 2 (ES2) electronics—the heart of which is a patented behind-the-saddle pickup with three uniquely positioned and individually calibrated pickup sensors. Because the pickup doesn't sit under the saddle, the bottom of the saddle comes in full contact with the bridge, allowing all the nuance of the guitar's tone to come through clearly, whether playing acoustically or plugged-in. The ES2 operates through a proprietary 9-volt battery compartment and easy-to-use Volume and active Bass and Treble controls. Additional appointments to the 414ce include a neo-tropical mahogany neck in a standard carve profile, a satin neck finish and gloss body finish, V-Class bracing and nickel tuners. A gorgeous fingerboard of colorful West African ebony with custom Imperial inlay patterns rounds out the design, making this limited-edition guitar a true work of art. |
Taylor AD27e Flametop $2,199

Combined with nickel bronze strings from D'Addario, the maple construction results in an appealingly rustic sound that's totally distinct from the pristine, vibrant quality that many players associate with Taylor.
Visually, the AD27e Flametop offers a rootsy, workmanlike vibe that fits right in with its siblings in the American Dream Series, with maple's beautiful figuring complemented by a dusky Woodsmoke finish and a satin sheen.
