Hi, I'm Mr. Joe. I've been teaching since 2000, mostly because it is so much fun. Besides piano & guitar lessons, I have also taught STOMP (percussion) classes. There is RHYTHM all around us everyday, and nobody is exempt. We've all known the steady beat since we were in our mama's belly, listening to her heart beat. Then comes MELODY. Perhaps the greatest instrument ever is the human voice. We can learn a lot from singing and speaking that applies directly to our other instruments.
I teach a love and appreciation for music, so that my students can become the communicators that will affect the world. I've been performing music for over 20 years around the globe. Everywhere from Hard Rock Cafe-Beijing to Lambeau Field, Washington D.C. to Vancouver, Hawaii to Thailand, East Coast, West Coast, and of course our own Midwest. Music can take you to amazing places. Currently, I'm playing in several ensembles around the state 3-7 times a week.
Writing songs is highly encouraged to my students. I have been actively songwriting for about 15 years, and it is one of the best expressions we have as humans. We don't remember Beethoven, Bach, Dylan, Mozart, or Beatles because of their technical skills (which incidentally, they all had in vast quantities). We remember the songs they left us, the ones which may have even inspired
us to pick up an instrument in the first place.
Not to dismiss technical proficiency. I have a bachelor's degree in music from UW Oshkosh. Theory, practice, listening and paying attention to what we're hearing; these are all tools that will help us become better at our craft. And if we intend to make good music, we must sharpen our tools.
